Mama Nasrah

Sacred remembrance of Mama Nasrah:

In Memory of Mama Nasrah "One who helps and assists"

The birth community has lost one of our beloved grand midwives, but we have all gained a sweet and powerful ancestor in Mama Nasrah. Her work was a gift to us and in equal measure, so was her presence, her smile, and her light. She carried peace in her smile, a playfulness and warmth - as if it had tucked within it the secret of how to see and hold the world with the innocence of a child’s heart.

Thank you, Mama Nasrah for your service. May your continued journey be as sweet, buoyant, and peaceful as your presence was in this life. May all whom you touched learn how to hold the people in our lives and the world around us with such intentional care.

Mama Nasrah was an elder midwife in Georgia. She practiced for over 45 years, servicing families in rural and urban areas of Georgia. Her commitment to lowering the Maternal and Infant mortality rates and learning ways to improve birth outcomes for families inspired many. She left a tremendous impact. Mama Nasrah helped to bring visibility to Midwifery and legitimize the work as an important tradition. She also helped more of us better realize the history of midwifery.

Mama Nasrah’s supported legislation for the certification of Community Midwives regardless of the path they entered the work from. She was a leader in recognizing the value of this added layer of protection for the broad community of birthworkers. At SisterSong, we are honored to have been able to know and work with her in our birth justice program and in our community.

Labor With Kaci

My passion as a birth professional is creating positive, empowering experiences for families, children, and babies. With a background in Social Work, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Master’s in Human Services, and graduation as a Community Midwife, I bring both academic knowledge and hands-on expertise to my work.

I’ve always learned best through service growing professionally while helping others. In my work with both teen mothers and adults, I discovered innovative and creative ways to keep my clients motivated and engaged throughout their journey. That commitment to education and empowerment is what inspired me to begin this path.

Through my experiences with teens especially, I recognized a critical need for accessible education before birth. That realization led me to pursue doula training, equipping me with the skills to educate, advocate, and address the disparities that affect my community. Today, my mission is to stand in the gap offering compassionate support, evidence-based education, and advocacy that saves lives and transforms birth experiences.

Wanda Lee (She/Her)

BIRTH JUSTICE CARE FUND SERVICES: Postpartum Doula/Lactation Support Professional
Ask Wanda

While studying Hotel, Restaurant, & Tourism Management in college, I joined the “learn in farm” mentorship program. There, I witnessed a significant problem: the fresh food grown by students on campus frequently suffered from spoilage in the cooler and had to be discarded. This produce was underutilized as compost instead of being distributed to hungry families and pregnant women who could benefit from it.

Motivated to find a solution, I developed a proposal for the program director. My idea was for students to raise funds and reduce waste by offering a monthly, low-cost fresh food box subscription. This service would be available to local restaurants, OB/GYN offices, WIC participants, senior centers, and families residing in designated food deserts where food insecurity was highest.

The proposal was approved, and for three consecutive years, I was responsible for organizing the online payment platforms, managing volunteers and distribution channels, which generated a major buzz within the community. During this hands-on experience, I realized just how many expectant mothers lacked access to locally grown fruits and vegetables. This realization became the catalyst for my journey in birth worker, postpartum wellness nutrition.

Watas Child

Birth work is a reminder of the innate wisdom our bodies carry. Formally trained as a social worker with experience in substance abuse treatment, autism spectrum disorder, and play therapy, Ashley’s work as a lactation professional is one of the ways she continues to honor the lineage she comes from. Ashley uplifts the wisdom of those who came before her through continued learning and implementation of the wisdom she acquires along the journey. Ashley’s path to lactation arose when she saw societal deficits within caring and feeding our birthing persons, infants, and respective families. She simply decided that something needed to be done firsthand and began the journey to birth work and lactation support. Ashley incorporates social justice, advocacy, community engagement, ancestral wellness, nutrition, and empowerment as pillars for the lactation journey. She’s a firm believer that nurturing our children creates long lasting change for generations to come.

Peace my name is Neriyah.

I am a Doula because Spirit told me to be. It was while grieving my daughter that TMH spoke to me and said to be the change I wished to see. Be a doula. I said a what?? Lol that started my journey to discovering an important reason for being on this earth. Each birth Ive experienced taught me something new that I wish to share with you. From my first induced birth, second spontaneous but medicated birth, third spontaneous non medicated hands off quick birth that the doctor had no time to prepare and witness, fourth emergency csestion which ended in her passing because it was too early and I didn't know how to advocate for myself nor did I have support all the way to my 5th home birth with a midwife and 3 doulas! Each birth was TOTALLY different & necessary for me to know how to help my mothers have a spiritually guided, peaceful birth no matter the outcome, because a birth that u feel empowered by, will put a smile on your face no matter how long ago it was. Knowing u did your best, with good support is top tier.

Pure Intentions Maternal Services

Greetings! My name is Phylicia Price. I am a fruitful mother of four. My love for maternal health flowed in as a little girl watching the women in my family assist other women in their pregnancy journey, labors and deliveries. At that time, it was what I was used to. I thought we all helped mothers. My love for the space grew and never left me even as I went on to do other things throughout life. One day I decided to follow my heart and began my education in maternal health with badoula trainings. I attended numerous other educational spaces and eventually graduated from Morehouse College. Advocating & assisting families in my community while working beside other beautiful souls is an unexplainable love. Helping families is a honor and I'm grateful to assist the ones that are called to me.

HALLE' (she/her/HERS)

BIRTH JUSTICE CARE FUND SERVICES: Birth Doula
Inner Nuru, LLC

Hallé graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Certified through The Matrona as a Holistic Birth Doula, she is a true advocate for self-healing and wellness. Her passion for healing began early, growing up with a mother who served as a substance abuse counselor for homeless individuals. That foundation instilled in her a deep love and care for others.

Her curiosity about human behavior led her to study psychology and social work, where she experienced the beauty and richness of HBCU culture. After volunteering at a summer camp for children in foster care, Hallé discovered her passion for helping those impacted by trauma, especially in the areas of mental, emotional, and sexual healing.

Now, her focus has evolved to supporting women, particularly Black women, through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Since becoming a certified Holistic Doula in 2019, Hallé continues to dedicate her work to advocacy, education, and compassionate care. She believes that every woman deserves to feel empowered, supported, and nurtured as she brings new life into the world.

JANITA WILEY, LMSW (she/her/HERS)
SNELLVILLE, GA

BIRTH JUSTICE CARE FUND SERVICES: Maternal Mental Health Therapist
MadeMind Wellness | Steady Hope

I believe to sit with another’s story is a sacred trust. We do not come to therapy because we are broken—we come because we are human. Within the tender places of motherhood, the unspoken ache of family, and the quiet struggles of the self, there is a strength waiting to rise. In our therapy, I will hold space for that strength, remind you of your wholeness, and walk beside you as you step fully into the life that has always been yours.

You might find yourself here feeling anxious, exhausted, or unsure of who you are in the middle of motherhood. Maybe you’re navigating postpartum depression, the overwhelm of caring for multiples, or the quiet fears that come with pregnancy or parenting while living with HIV. Together, we’ll make sense of what feels heavy, strengthen your support systems, and help you reconnect with the parts of yourself that feel lost or buried.

I’m a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) practicing in Georgia with advanced training in perinatal and maternal mental health. My work blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, and Mindfulness to support women in finding balance, healing, and self-compassion through every stage of motherhood.

BIRTH JUSTICE CARE FUND SERVICES: Birth Doula/Postpartum Doula
Breath in Birth

I honor my great grandmother who was a midwife and pediatrician in the village of Mpwapwa, Tanzania; who ushered babies Earthside with traditional pracitices and instinctive wisdom. In her spirit, I birthed two beautiful babies in the comfort of my own home, with the support of midwives.

I was led to this work after the birth of my beloved niece, Zahra. Upon completing a comprehensive doula training, I chose to continue my education and attended Emory University’s Registered Nurse program. I have experience in women’s health caring for & supporting birthing people through the pocess of pregnancy, labor & immediate postpartum, both as a doula & a registered nurse. I have also been trusted to help in the healing process of those who have experienced breast cancer, ovarian cancers, C-sections, among various other surgeries.

I am honored and grateful to be trusted in these transformative spaces.

As your doula, I meet you where you are. We will discuss your needs and wants for your birth & will co-create a plan to support your vision. Everything you need is within.

Together we will explore & excavate your internal strength to guide you during this divine rite of passage.

MABLETON, GA

BIRTH JUSTICE CARE FUND SERVICES: Full Spectrum Doula/Loss and Bereavement doula
Ebonically Holistic

Oyàtaladé Òpánaní is a full-spectrum and bereavement doula, ancestral healing practitioner, and sacred transitions guide supporting families through the most vulnerable thresholds of life: birth, postpartum, loss, identity shifts, and the quiet grief no one warns you about. Her work honors the truth that transition is ceremony, and every chapter deserves informed, compassionate care.

As a birth doula, she centers advocacy, education, and nervous-system safety. She helps parents navigate medical systems without losing their voice, breathe through intensity without abandoning themselves, and enter labor with both ancestral confidence and evidence-based clarity. Her approach blends somatic grounding, breathwork, ritual language, and practical comfort measures to reduce trauma and amplify agency.

In postpartum care, she prioritizes nourishment, lactation support, emotional integration, sleep strategies, and community resourcing. She rejects the culture that glorifies bouncing back and instead protects the sacred slowness required to heal and bond. Her support extends to partners, siblings, and family systems, recognizing birth reshapes everyone.

As a bereavement doula, she holds miscarriage, stillbirth, termination, and silent grief with reverence offering ceremony, witnesseship, and tools for integration.

She doesn’t simply support transitions; she consecrates them protecting the body, honoring the spirit, and anchoring the lineage that arrives through each breath.
