SisterSong’s work in North Carolina is rooted in the rich legacy of Reproductive Justice and Southern movement work. We approach our work with a sense of reverence steeped in love for the beauty of the state and its people. North Carolina carries a rich history shaped by Black people and communities of color, made up of immigrant families and indigenous peoples. Our work spans the entirety of the state with an emphasis on underserved and underresourced rural regions such as Robeson County, Anson County, and Moore County. Guided by principles of care and community, SisterSong’s North Carolina state team nurtures spaces where communities can live, grow, and raise families with dignity and joy.
What We Do
Our work is guided by three key tenets: Healing, Housing, and Environmental and Food Justice. By including and placing emphasis on these elements, we recognize that community requires a holistic approach that seeks to hold the many facets of true reproductive justice.
Our approach to healing honors the emotional, spiritual, and cultural well-being across North Carolina. We cultivate warm and creative spaces where community care and storytelling can flourish.
Safe and steady housing is essential for a secure family and community life. We collaborate with housing coalitions and local partners to support people experiencing housing instability or the risk of displacement. This work holds particular importance for rural regions, where resources are often limited, and strong community networks are required to sustain stability.
Environmental and Food Justice honor care for both people and the land. Through Black farmers, farmers of color, Indigenous organizations, and food-centered groups, we aim to strengthen access to nourishing food and shared land knowledge. Our approach to Environmental Justice also highlights and responds to the environmental harms that continue to impact communities of color, creating healthcare gaps and maternal care deserts that leave many families without safe and affirming care.
Together, these efforts protect community health, uplift culture, and honor the land that cares for us.
Why It Matters
Reproductive justice is about full and thriving lives. Many North Carolina communities, especially in rural regions, continue to face barriers to care, food access, and safe housing. Statewide programming helps bridge these gaps through relationship building, shared learning, and community connection so folks have what they need to rest, grow, and care for one another.
Past Work/Legacy
We are working to build a lasting legacy of Reproductive Justice and care in the state of North Carolina. Through partnerships with local educational institutions, events, and diverse organizations, we are gathering the communities of North Carolina to host critical conversations, provide expansive reproductive and sex education, develop a holistic approach to community care, and expand critical advocacy and movement work.
