SisterSong Statement on the 2026 Election Results
ATLANTA, GA THIS is what happens when our communities build power together! 🙌🏾💜
Last night, Black women made HISTORY! Here in Georgia, we witnessed a historic milestone with the election of Governor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms, the nation’s first Black woman governor.
We honor the Black women who broke barriers and helped make this moment possible, including Stacey Abrams, whose historic gubernatorial campaigns in 2018 and 2022 helped pave the way for this milestone.
From historic wins in Illinois to Colorado, Black women showed UP and showed OUT at the ballot box! And the victories didn’t stop there. Texas elected its first Latina governor, while New Mexico and Minnesota made history with groundbreaking wins for Native American women.
The win in Georgia, and all of these wins, are for Amber, Candi, Adriana, and the countless Black, Brown, queer, and trans immigrants, young and old, whose bodies and lives were harmed or lost to the violence of this current administration.
We’re SO proud to support Black women’s leadership and celebrate the women of color who are breaking barriers and making space for generations to come.
And that’s not all we were celebrating last night! Voters in Virginia and Nevada secured abortion rights protections in their state constitutions, while Missouri voters REJECTED an attempt to roll back reproductive freedom.
We have a LOT to celebrate. And we’ve also got a lot of work ahead. Because making history at the ballot box is only the beginning. A right on paper means NOTHING if our people can’t physically or financially access the care they need, make decisions about our own bodies, and raise our families in safe, thriving environments.
So what’s next? Our job is to hold every elected official accountable and make sure our communities can actually access the care, resources, and support we deserve. And we do that by continually showing up for our communities, organizing for our human rights, making space for conversations with our people, and fighting for healthcare, bodily autonomy, and the freedom to raise our families in safe, thriving communities.
The path to Reproductive Justice and collective liberation runs through the South, with Black women at the helm.
Trust Black Women. 💜
